Over the years I've met hundreds of really cool people at competitions. I've been fortunate enough to see some of those people many times since meeting them, and I now look forward to seeing them at FIRST events. As I've made new friends, I've discovered that it can be quite challenging to balance social time with supporting my team. So, here are 10 tips for making new friends and for not abandoning your team while doing it!

It was so much fun meeting all the teams at the Duel on the Delaware scrimmage this Saturday! We had a great time competing with and talking to all the teams there. After scrambling all morning to get our robot in working order we found ourselves in the first match with four robots competing! On the blue alliance, us and Titanium Devils 8705 and in the red alliance Watt's Up 5169 and Watt Next 7350.
As a rookie team getting ready to compete on a field with other robots for the first time, we needed a lot of help. Our main challenge yesterday was a servo which jittered any time it moved (rather than moving smoothly from point A to point B). We would like to send a huge thank-you to foobar 6045, Watt's Up 5169, and MOE 365 who helped us try and figure out what the problem was. Another thank-you to Matt from MOE for helping me with Autodesk Inventor. And of course a huge, huge thank-you to New Jersey FTC and First State Robotics for organizing the Duel, Salem Community College for letting us use their facilities, and last but not least all the volunteers who made this event possible. We think it's a great way for teams to get to know each other before a competition and get help if they need it - we certainly did! Posted by "E. A. Poe" Last Saturday we attended the Dover, DE Kickoff to hear about the new game Cascade Effect. It was fun meeting some other teams for the first time. We talked to the team from Early College High School and look forward to seeing them at future events.
We are really excited to start work on Cascade Effect! It looks challenging but it will be a lot of fun. We led a dance of Cotton Eyed Joe, Cupid Shuffle, and Cha Cha Slide. The Cotton Eyed Joe was the most popular. We made special buttons for the Kickoff highlighting the dance. Hope to see lots of teams at the brainstorming session this Saturday! - 'E. A. Poe' and 'Silverstien' The kickoff for the 2014-2015 is one week away. Just one week. We are so excited!
We're going to be attending the First State Robotics kickoff in Dover, DE. We wanted to do something to get us even more excited for kickoff and to bond with the other teams. So, we're going to host a line dancing session at the kickoff! We'll teach new teams and team members the most popular FTC line dances and it will be a great refresher for everyone else. We can't wait to see all of the teams that we haven't gotten to see over the summer and to find out what our new challenge is. What do you think the new game will be? Let us know in a comment! -"Emily Dickinson" Last Tuesday our team had the opportunity to have a booth at the Tri-State homeschool club night, our very first outreach event! The event was designed to help clubs, primarily homeschool ones, find new members. We got to talk to many fellow homeschoolers about FIRST and our team. Although many of the students there were too young for FTC, they were very interested in our friends, FLL team ThunderMinds.
One thing we learned is to make sure you have everything packed before you get to the event. One of our wheels was loose and we didn't have the right size hex wrench to fix it, rookie mistake! It was a good start for our outreach to our community, thank you to Tri-State homeschool for hosting the event! We hope to see you all at future events :) -"Emily Dickinson" |
